About Maiko

Born in Aichi prefecture. Graduated from the University of Tokyo. Master of Arts in Literature (Chinese Literature). Part-time lecturer at Tokyo University of Science. Visiting researcher at Tokyo Metropolitan University. Current specialty is educational technology. Participated in the development of the Chinese learning app "WAVE Chinese You". The principal investigator and collaborative researcher of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Hobby is cooking. Since my daughter Yuina started inline skating, I have also worked on music editing and costume making for figure skating, based on my experience in editing lesson videos and making my own wedding dress.

I have been involved in Chinese language education as a part-time lecturer since 2011, and while experiencing education using ICT, I began to study education that maximizes the abilities of learners and enriches their lives from the perspective of educational technology. Since 2014, I have been practicing education using ICT including flipped classrooms, and while continuing to present at academic conferences and submit papers, I have strongly realized the effectiveness of e-Learning. Also, since April 2021, I have witnessed my daughter Yuina learn and grow inline skating techniques through e-Learning videos and online lessons. I would like to utilize these experiences and academic accumulation in the operation of TCSC and contribute to the development of figure skating.

What do you need to start inline skating?

Basically what you need to start inline figure skating are skating boots and frames, that substitute the blade used for ice skating. Boots used for inline skating are the same as for ice skating and vary with the level of your skill and elements you execute. The same goes for frames / wheels/ toe-pics.

Protective gear such as helmet, wrist-, knee- and elbow guards are recommended to start skating safely.

Meet Yuina - TCSC skater and Gary Beacom's student

9-year-old Yuina SHINOZUKA from Japan has been skating 2 and a half years of which the last 6 months she has been coached online by Gary Beacom.

Yuina thinks skating is a very difficult sport, but she loves it very much. Making progress and learning new elements makes her very happy.

Being coached online is not complicated thinks Yuina. She is enjoying working with Gary, confirms Yuina's mother Maiko. Gary's advice is always easy to understand, accurate, and very helpful. We do video calls and video analyses. We film her practices and Gary gives her feedback. Yuina is perfectionist so she practices very hard and only when she is convinced she is doing well, she allows the video to be sent to Gary.

Since starting to work with Gary Yuina has also been taking part in inline skating competitions, and she has been very successful winning Gold and Silver medals in WIFSA Inline Open kids division. Gary always encourages her with warm words. He gives very good advice on what she should do to get her best performance says Maiko, Yuina's mother.
